What is slag?...

What is slag?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

It is a light and easily fusible material formed when gangue still left in the calcined or roasted ore combines with the flux. For example, in the extraction of iron, the concentrated ore is heated with limestone `(CaCO_3)` which decomposes to give Cao. CaO (flux) combines with silica (gangue) to form `CaSiO_3` (slag).
`CaCO_3 to CaO + CO_2 uarr`
