Copper matte is charged into a silica lined converter in extraction of copper. What is the role of silica lining here?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Copper matte contains `Cu_2S` and `FeO`. It is put into a silica lined Bessemer converter. On blowing hot air, FeS is oxidised to FeO which is removed as slag by combining with silica.
