Reduction of unsaturated compounds with active metals such as Li, Na, K, etc. and liquid ammonia is called Birch reduction. This reduction is stereoselective, i.e., under one set of given conditions, it gives only one stereo-isomer. For example, reduction of alkynes gives only trans - alkenes.

In arenes, 1, 4 Addition of hydrogen atoms occurs.
