Esterification Reaction or Fisher esteri...

Esterification Reaction or Fisher esterification.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Alcohols react with carboxylic acids in presence of dry HCl gas or a few drops of conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)` as catalyst to form esters. For example,
`underset("Acetic acid")(CH_(3)-overset(O)overset(||)(C)-OH)+underset("Ethanol")(HOCH_(2)CH_(3))underset(H_(2)SO_(4))overset("Conc.")(hArr)underset("Ethyl acetate")(CH_(3)-overset(O)overset(||)(C)-OCH_(2)CH_(3)+H_(2)O)`
This slow and reversible reaction is called esterification reaction. When dry HCl gas is used as a catalyst, the reaction is commonly known as Fischer - speier esterification.
