Oxymercuration and Demurcuration of alkenes.

Alkenes react with mercuric acetate in a mixture of ThF and water to give a mercury compound involving addition of `-OH` and `HgOAC` to the double bond. This reaction is called oxymercuration. This compound on reduction with `NaBH_(4)` yields an alcohol. This is called demercuration.
