The reaction leading to conversion of an aldehyde or ketone to the corresponding amine on treatment with ammonia in presece of a reducing agent such as `H_(2)`/Raney Ni or `NaBH_(3)CN` (sodium cyanoborohydride) is called reductive amination.
For example,

If instead of ammonia, a primary amine is used in the above reactive, secondary amine is produced. For example,

Similarly, if instead of `1^(@)` amine (aniline), a secondary amine is used in the above reaction, tertiary amine is produced.

in this reaction, `NaBH_(3)CN` is used instead of `NaBH_(4)` because `NaBH_(3)CN` being less reactive than `NaBH_(4)`, reduces only the imines to amines but not aldehyde and ketones to corresponding alcohols.
