Distinction between pairs of compounds
Methanol `(CH_(3)OH)` and Phenol `(C_(6)H_(5)OH)`
(i) `Br_(2)`-water test.
(ii) `FeCl_(3)` test.
(iii) Litmus test.

Explanation

Following tests help to distinguish these :
(i) `CH_(3)OH` does not react with `Br_(2)` water. Phenol reacts with bromine water to give white ppt. of 2, 4, 6-tribromophenol.
(ii) Phenol gives violet colour with `FeCl_(3)` solution while `CH_(3)OH` does not.
(iii) Phenol (acidic) turns blue litmus red while `CH_(3)OH` does not.
