Text Solution

Following tests help to distinguish these :
By the use of Tollens. reagent and Fehling.s solution.
Acetaldehyde gives silver mirror with Tollens. reagent and red ppt. of `Cu_(2)O` with Fehling.s solution. Acetone does not give these tests.
(a) `underset("Acetaldehyde")(CH_(3)CHO)+underset("Tollens. reagent")(2[Ag(NH_(3))_(2)]^(+))+3OH^(-)rarr`
(b) `CH_(3)CHO+underset("From Fehling solution")ubrace(2Cu^(2+)+5OH^(-))rarrCH_(3)COO^(-)+3H_(2)O+Cu_(2)O" Red ppt."`
