Distinction between pairs of compounds
Propanone `(CH_(3)COCH_(3))` and ethanol

The two can be distinguished by Brady.s reagent test or 2, 4-dinitrophenyl hydrazone test. Propanone being a ketone gives crystalline orange ppt. with 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazine in weakly acidic conditions.

Propanone-2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazone (Orange ppt.)
In contrast, ethanol does not give this test.
Note. These two compounds cannot be distinguished by iodoform test because both of them contain `CH_(3)CO` - or `CH_(3)CHOH` - grouping linked to carbon.
