How is galena (PbS) present as impurity removed from the ore of zinc blende?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The finely pulverised ore is mixed with a cheap oil like pine oil, a foaming agent such as a xanthate and a depressant such as sodium cyanide and the mixture is taken into a tank containing water. The mixture is agitated by blowing in compressed air when lead sulfide first forms a froth and is removed. On adding more oil, foaming agent and blowing air, zinc sulfide forms froth and is separated.
