Sun is the ultimate source of energy and no animal can use the solar energy directly. Green plants are the only organisms which are capable of trapping the solar energy as they contain a green pigment called chlorophyll. Thus, the solar energy is converted into chemical energy and then stored in the food prepared by the plants. This energy gets transferred to other organisms through the food chain. Thus, if plants are non-existent, then animals have to starve for food. Plants release oxygen by the process of photosynthesis and this oxygen is essential for the respiration in animals.
