Explain how the attractive force exerted...

Explain how the attractive force exerted by a charged object on a neutral object near it could be related to the concept of charging by induction.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Charging by induction means charging without contact, so, when a charged object with positive charge is brought closer to a neutral object, the positive charge within the neutral object gets repelled by the external positive charge and moves away from it but the negative charge within the neutral object gets attracted to the external positive charge and moves towards it. This leads to a separation of charge within the neutral object and charges of opposite polarity get collected on its two opposite faces. Hence, charge is induced in a neutral object.
