A cylindrical body of area of cross section `100 cm^(2)` and length 20 cm is immersed in a liquid whose density is `1.5 g cm^(-3)`. If the density of the solid is `2 g cm^(-3)`, calculate the upthrust acting on the body.

Text Solution

Upthrust (F) = Vdg
Where V = volume of the liquid displaced by the cylinder = the volume of the cylinder itself.
`therefore` V=Al
=100 `cm^2xx20` cm
=2000 `cm^3`
F = 2000 `cm^3xx 1.5 g cm^(-3)xx980 cm s^(-2)`
= 2940000 dyne
`therefore` F= 29.4 N
