Why gas filled balloons rise up, only to a certain height ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Will the gas filled inside the balloon have density? Will density of the air decrease with increase in height above the sea level? Then what happens to the atmospheric pressure at higher altitudes? Do the objects always move from higher pressure area to lower pressure area? When the pressure inside the balloon equals to the atmospheric pressurc, will the balloon rise up?

Hot air balloon rises up in sky because

Statement-1: A gas filled balloon stops rising after it has attained a certain height in the sky. Statement-2: At the highest point the density of air is such that the buoyant force on the balloon just equals its weight.

Statement I: A hydrogen-filled balloon stops rising after it has attained a certain height in the sky. Statement II: The atmospheric pressure decreases with height and becomes zero when the maximum height is attained.

A balloon partially filled with helium has a volume of 30 m^3 , at the earth's surface, where pressure is 76 cm of (Hg) and temperature is 27^@ C What will be the increase in volume of gas if balloon rises to a height, where pressure is 7.6 cm of Hg and temperature is -54^@ C ?
