Sound waves travel from air to water. The velocity of the sound waves in air is `332 ms^(-1)` and wavelength is 2m. If the wavelength of the sound waves in water is 850 cm, find its velocity in water

Let us first calculate the frequency of the sound waves.
` V= n lamda `
Substituting the values of `V = 332 m s^(-1) and lamda = 2 m`, we get` ( V)/(lamda) = (332)/( 2)` n = 166 Hz.
The frequency of the sound waves remains constant, as it travels from air to water. Hence, using the formula
` V= n lamda ` and substituting n = 166 Hz and `lamda ` = 850 cm = 8.5 m, we get `V = 166 xx 8.5 = 1411 m s^(-1)`.
