Is it possible to perpare oxygen and hydrogen by the electrolysis of pure water? Give reasons in support of your answer. How are hydrogen and oxygen prepared in industry by the electrolysis of water?

Electrolysis of pure water cannot give oxygen and hydrogen since water is a poor conductor. To make it an electrolytic conductor, some amount of acid should be added to water which is called acidulated water. Electrolysis of acidulated water gives hydrogen and oxygen at the respective lectrodes.
