Between `H_(2)SO_(4) "and" H_(3)PO_(4)`, which solution possesses greater number of `H^(+)` ions in the given volume assuming that the number of molecules of both acids are equal? Give reasons.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As `H_(2)SOA_(4)` is a strong acid, it produces greater number of `H^(+)` ions, i.e., complete ionisation.
`H_(2)SO_(4) to 2H^(+) + SO_(4)^(-2)`
As `H_(3)PO_(4)` is a weak acid, it produces less number of H+ ions, i.e., partial ionisation.
`H_(3)PO_(4) to 3H^(+) + PO_(4)^(-3)`

Find the total number of electrons in a molecule of phosphoric acid (H_(3)PO_(4)) .

Asseration: Both H_(3)PO_(4) and H_(3)PO_(3) posses the same number of hydrogen atoms, but H_(3)PO_(4) os tribasic acid and H_(3)PO_(4) is dibasic. Reason: In oxoacids only those H -atoms are replaceable which are attached to O-atom .

Asseration: H_(3)PO_(4) and f H_(3)PO_(3) both are present in fertilizers. Reason: H_(3)PO_(3) increases the solubility of fertilizers.
