What is the role of calcium hydroxide used in making mortar and white washing?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Mortar is a mixture of calcium hydroxide, sand and water. On exposure to atmosphere calcium hydroxide reacts with `CO_(2)` forming `CaCO_(3)` which is a hard substance, and hence, strengthens the construction. `Ca(OH)_(2)` is used for white washing because of the formation of white-coloured `CaCO_(3)` substance.
