The sculptures and monuments get damaged...

The sculptures and monuments get damaged due to acid rains. Usage of scrubbers, containing lime water, in industries decreases the percentage content of the major air pollutants that contribute to acid rain. The characteristic reaction involved in the scrubber is

A

neutralisation

B

oxidation

C

reduction

D

combination followed by decomposition

The correct Answer is:
A

Marble is made of `CaCO_3` which gets dissolved when it reacts with acids like `H_2SO_4` or `HNO_3` of acid rains. The major pollutants which contribute to acid rain, `NO_2` and `SO_2` are released into the atmosphere. The `NO_2` and `SO_2` percentage content in the atmosphere can be decreased by using equipment like scrubbers. In a scrubber, powdered `CaCO_3` is taken which undergoes decomposition to give CaO. This quick lime combines with `SO_2` to form `CaSO_3` which is removed as slurry.
`underset("base")(CaO) + SO_2 to underset("acid")(CaSO_3 darr)`
Hence, it is a neutralisation reaction.
