What happens when electric current is passed through water?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When an electric current is passed through water, electrolysis of water occurs, which is the decomposition of water.(`H_1O`) into hydorgen gas `(H_2)` and oxygen `(O_2)`. Hydrogen gas forms at the cathode where the electrons enter the water and at the anode, axygen is formed.
