What is keystone species ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A keystone species is a species that has a disproportionately large effect on its environment relative to its abundance. Such species are important in maintaining the structure of an ecological community by affecting other organisms in an ecosystem and helping to determine the abundance of other species in the community, e.g. beaver (a mammal) who creates dams, modifies nutrient cycling, enfluences decomposition dynamics which ultimately influences the plants and animals of that area.
