An aqueous solution of `AgNO_(3)` with silver electrodes. In aqueous solution , ionisation of `AgNO_(3)` and `H_(2) O` takes place.
`AgNO_(3) ( s) overset( aq) ( hArr) Ag^(+) ( aq) + NO_(3) ^(-) ( aq)`
`H_(2) O ( l ) hArr H^(+)( aq) + OH^(-)( aq)`
At cathode `Ag^(+)` ion has less discharge potential than `H^(+)` ion, so silver will be deposited at cathode.
`Ag^(+) ( aq) + e^(-) rarr Ag(s)`
At anode An equivalent amount of silver will be oxidised to `Ag^(+)` ions by releasing electrons.
`Ag(s) rarr Ag^(+) (aq) + e^(-)`
Ag anode is attacked by `NO_(3)^(-)` ions, so it will also produce `Ag^(+)` ions in the solution .
