State and explain Faraday's law of electrolysis. When a current of 1.5 amperes strength is passed through a solution of a salt of a metal ( atomic mass = 112 ) for 15 min , 0.783 g of the metal is deposited. Find out the valency of the metal.

Text Solution

Mass deposited ( m ) = `= ( "Equivalent weight ")/( 96500) xx i xx t`
`0.783 = ( 112)/( "Valency" xx 96500) xx 1.5 xx 15 xx 10`
[ `:.` Equivalent weight `= ("Atomic weight")/( "Valency")]`
Valency `= ( 112 xx 1.5 xx 15 xx 60)/( 0.783xx96500) = 2`
