Explain why halogens are strong oxidising agents.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to low bond dissociation enthalpy, high electronegativity and large negative electron gain enthalpy, halogens have a strong tendency to accept electrons and thus get reduced.
`X_(2)+2e^(-) to 2X^(-)`
That.s why, they act as good oxidising agents.
