What are the interstitial compounds ? Why are such compounds well known for transition metals ?

The compounds in which small atoms like H, C, N, etc., occupy interstitial sites in the crystak lattice are called interstitial compounds.
Theses compounds are well known for transition metal because small atoms can easily occupy the positions in the voids presents in the crystal lattices of transition metals.
