Why can one ignore quantisation of electric charge, when dealing with macroscopic, i.e. large scale charges?

Text Solution

In practice, the charge on a charged body is very large. On the other hand, the charge on an electron is very small. When electrons are added to a body or removed from a body, the change taking place in the total charge on the body is so small that the charge seems to be varying in a continuous manner. Therefore, quantisation of electric charge can be ignored, when dealing with a large scale charged

Given fgure shows a charge array known as an electric quadrupole. For a point on the axis of the quadrupole, obtain the dependence of potential on r for r//a gt gt1 and constrast your results with that due to an electric dipole and an electric monopole (i.e. a single charge). A quadrupole is considered always a system of three charges q,-2q and q.
