What is the area of the plates of a 2 F...

What is the area of the plates of a 2 F parallel plate capacitor, given that the separation between the plates is 0 . 5 cm, ?(you will realise from your answer why ordinary capacitors are in the range of `mu F` or less. However, electrolytic capacitors do have a much large capacitance (0.1 F) because of very minimum separation between the conductors )

Given, capacitance, C = 2 F
and separation between plates, `d = 0 . 5 cm = 0 . 5 xx 10^(-2) m`

`:.` Capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor ,
`C = (epsilon_(0) A)/( d)`
or `A = (Cd)/( epsilon_(0)) = (2 xx 0 . 5 xx 10^(-2))/( 8 . 854 xx 10 ^(-12))`
`= 1 . 13 xx 10 ^(9) m^(2) = 1130 km^(2)`
This area is very large, so it is not possible that the capacitance of a capacitor is too large as 2F. So, the capacitance of any capacitor should be of range of `2 mu F `
