Why is it necessary to use acetic acid and not sulphuric acid for acidification of sodium extract for testing sulphur by lead acetate test?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Lead acetate will react with sulphuric acid to give white precipitate of lead sulphate. This will interfere with the detection of the test for sulphur.
`underset("Lead acetate")((CH_(3)COO)_(2))Pb+H_(2)SO_(4) rarr underset("(White ppt.)")(PbSO_(4))+2 CH_(3)COOH`
Acetic acid `(CH_(3)COOH)` will not interfere in the detection of sulphur.
