Explain why is O=C=O non polar while R-O-R is polar ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

O=C=P i.e., `CO_(2)` molecule is of linear nature. The polarities of two C to O bonds nutually cancel out and the moelcule is of non-polar nature. On the other hand, R-O-R is a non-linear molecule with bond angle close to `110^(@)` . Since the bond polarities donot cancel out. the molecule is of polar natue.
