Can Gatterman-Koch reaction be considered similar to Friedel-Craft's acylation ? Discuss.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Both these reactions appear to be similar but are actually not. Gatterman-Koch reaction is primarily used to convert benzene into benzaldehyde. The attacking reagent formyl chloride (HCOCl) is not stable. It is generated in situ (in the reaction mixture) by passing vapours of carbon monoxide and hydrogen chloride on reaction mixture containing benzene and the catalyst `(Anhyd. AlCl_(3)+CuCl).`

Friedel Craft's reaction is not possible in this case.
