A transverse wave on a string travelling along + ve x-axis has been shown in the figure below: The mathmetical form of the shown wave is y=(3.0 cm) sin [2pixx0.1t-(2pi)/(100)x] where t is in seconds and x is in centimetres. (i) The equation of wave in a string fixed at both end is y = 2 sin pi t cos pi x . Find the phase difference between oscillations of two points located at x = 0.4 m and x = 0.6 m . (ii) A string having length L is under tension with both the ends free to move. Standing wave is set in the string and the shape of the string at time t = 0 is as shown in the figure. Both ends are at extreme. The string is back in the same shape after regular intervals of time equal to T and the maximum displacement of the free ends at any instant is A. Write the equation of the standing wave.

An oscillator of frequency 680 Hz drives two speakers . The speakers are fixed on a vertical pole at a distance 3 m from each other as shown in Fig. 7.103. A person whose height is almost the same as that of the lower speaker walks towards the lower speaker in a direction perpendicular to the pole. Assuming that there is no reflection of sound from the ground and speed of sound is v = 340 m//s , answer the following questions. At some instant , when the person is at a distance 4 m from the pole , the wave function ( at the person's location) that describes the waves coming from the lower speaker y = A cos (kx - omega t) , where A is the amplitude , omega = 2 pi v with v = 680 Hz (given) and k = 2 pi//lambda Wave function ( at the person's location) that describes waves coming from the upper speaker can be expressed as :

Assertion (A): The musical notes produced by two musical instruments, like guitar and sitar are different even if the length and the thickness of the strings in both instruments are the same. Reason (R) : The difference in two sounds of equal pitch and loudness can be distinguished by a characteristic property called quality of sound ro timbre.
