The diagram shows a tester consisting of a battery and LED whose open ends are dipped in a liquid. It is observed that even after some time , LED does not glow. Could it be due to the liquid being :

A

Vinegar

B

molten salt

C

molten iron

D

pure cold water?

Since the LED does not glow, it is evident that there is no flow of a current in the tester. Except cold water, all others are good conductors of electricity. Therefore, the liquid must be cold wa water which does not allow the current to pass through it

Describe an activity to show that a liquid when left exposed to air disappears after some time .

A cylindrical container of height 3L and cross sectional area A is fitted with a smooth movable piston of negligible weight. It contains an ideal diatomic gas. Under normal atmospheric pressure P_(0) the piston stays in equilibrium at a height L above the base of the container. The gas chamber is provided with a heater and a copper coil through which a cold liquid can be circulated to extract heat from the gas. Volume occupied by the heater and the liquid coil is negligible. Following set of operations are performed to take the gas through a cyclic process. (1) Heater is switched on. At the same time a tap above the cylinder is opened. Water fills slowly in the container above the piston and it is observed that the piston does not move. Water is allowed to fill the container so that the height of water column becomes L. Now the tap is closed. (2) The heater is kept on and the piston slowly moves up. Heater is switched off at the time water is at brink of overflowing. (3) Now the cold liquid is allowed to pass through the coil. The liquid extracts heat from the gas. Water is removed from the container so as to keep the position of piston fixed. Entire water is removed and the gas is brought back to atmospheric pressure. (4) The circulation of cold liquid is continued and the piston slowly falls down to the original height L above the base of the container. Circulation of liquid is stopped. Assume that the container is made of adiabatic wall and density of water is rho . Force on piston due to impact of falling water may be neglected. (a) Draw the entire cycle on a P–V graph. (b) Find the amount of heat supplied by the heater and the amount of heat extracted by the cold liquid from the gas during the complete cycle.

A U-tube of cross section A and 2A contains liquid of density rho . Initially, the liquid in the two arms are held with a level difference h as shown in figure. After being released the levels equalize after some time. The work done by gravity forces on the liquid in the process is :

Draw the neat diagrams for modes of vibration of an air column in a pipe, when (i) the pipe is open at both ends, and (ii) the pipe is closed at one end. Hence derive an expression for fundamental fre-quency in each case. A horizontal cicular loops of a wire of radius 0.02 m is lowered into crude oil and film is formed. The force due to the surface tension of the liquid is 0.0113 N . Calculate the surface a tension of the crude oil. (pi = 3.142)

Some experiments were carried out using Croton sp. plants to understand the process of photosynthesis. It was observed that the leaves of the plant exposed to light for longer duration accumulated more starch. However, due to presence of pre-formed starch in the leaves, it was difficult to find the net productivity on a fixed exposure to light source. Therefore, it was necessary to obtain starch free leaves in the plant before starting the experiment. During the morning hours, using a fine blade, an incision was made to the leaves such that the phloem tissue was cut open. Analysis of the liquid oozing out was found to contain high amount of:
