Why are mitochondria called semi-autonomous organelles?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Mitochondria contain DNA as well as ribosomes and are able to synthesise some of their own proteins. But since they depend on nuclear gene for biogenesis and on ground cytoplasm for biosynthetic activities they cannot exist independently. Hence, they are called semi-autonomous organelles.
