Acute diseases : These are short duration diseases which generally have a relatively severe course. Normal activity is impaired but only for a few days. Soon the patient recovers and begins to lead a normal active life. Being of short duration an acute disease is unable to cause major effect on health, e.g., common cold, malaria, typhoid, diarrhoea. Chronic diseases : These diseases last for a long time, even as much as a lifetime. The chronic diseases have drastic long term effects on patient.s health. Examples of chronic diseases are diabetes, tuberculosis, elephantiasis, cardio-vascular diseases, arthritis, cancer etc.
