What is the cause of the depletion of the ozone layer?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

There are many substances which we use in our day to day life, that cause depletion of ozone layer and are called ozone depleting substances (ODS).
Some examples of ODS are:
- Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
- Methane `(CH_(4))`.
Nitrous Oxides `(NO_(x))`.
- Chlorine and bromine containing compounds such as methyl chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, etc.
- Soil fumigants
The ozone depleting substances cause ozone hole. The ODS react with the UV radiations of sun and release chlorine and bromine atoms. The chlorine atoms destroy ozone.
