Both nitrification and denitrification occur in soil. Nitrification is the process of conversion of ammonia into nitrites and nitrates that enrich the soil with usable forms of nitrogen. Denitrification involves disintegration of nitrates by bacteria and release of gaseous nitrogen to atmosphere. It maintains continuous supply of nitrogen in atmosphere.
