Which of the following bases are stronge...

Which of the following bases are stronger and by how much?
  `NH_(3)` and `NH_(2)OH`
`(k_(b(NH_(3))) = 1.77 xx 10^(-5), k_(b(NH_(2)OH)) = 1.1 xx 10^(-8))`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`(alpha_(NH_(3)))/(alpha_(NH_(2)OH)) = sqrt((k_(b(NH_(3))))/k_(b(NH_(4)OH)))`
`= sqrt((1.77 xx 10^(-5))/(1.1 xx 10^(-8))) = sqrt(1.609 xx 10^(3))`
`= sqrt(16.09 xx 10^(2)) = 4.011 xx 10 = 40.11`
Therefore, `NH_(3)` is almost 40 times stronger than `NH_(2)OH`.
