Which of the following bases are stronge...

Which of the following bases are stronger and by how much?
   `N_(2)H_(4)` and `CH_(3)NH_(2)`
`(k_(b(N_(2)H_(4))) = 1.7 xx 10^(-6), k_(b(CH_(3)NH_(2))) = 3.7 xx 10^(-4))`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`(alpha_(CH_(3)NH_(2)))/(alpha_(N_(2)H_(4))) = sqrt((k_(b(CH_(3)NH_(2))))/(k_(b(N_(2)H_(4)))))`
`= sqrt((3.7 xx 10^(-4))/(1.7 xx 10^(-6))) = sqrt(2.176 xx 10^(2))`
`= 1.475 xx 10 = 14.75`
Therefore, `CH_(3)NH_(3)` is almost 15 times stronger than `N_(2)H_(4)`.
