What is fission? What is the basic difference between fission in amoeba and paramecium?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

This is the division of the parent body into two or more daughter individuals genetically identical to the parent. Fission can occur by binary fission, multiple fission and plasmotomy.
(i) Fission in Amoeba. It is simple or irregular binary fission, which can occur through any plane.

(ii) Fission in Paramecinm. It is transverse binary fission as shown. The plane of division runs along the transverse axis of the individual, e.g., Paramecium, Planaria, diatoms and bacteria. In Paramecium meganucleus divides by amiitosis, while micronucleus divides by mitosis.
