Both Meiosis and Fertilization are essential to maintain chromosome number, constant. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Meiosis and fertilisation are essential to maintain chromosome number constant as gametes formed are always haploid (in). In diploid organisms gametes are formed by gameter meiosis. The male and female haploid gametes (sperm & ovum) fuse to form diploid zygote called as fertilisation. This again restores the chromosome number of a species. In haploid organisms, the gametes are formed directly to form diploid zygote. The zygote undergoes zygotic meiosis to restore haploid condition.
