Which plant was selected by Mendel for his experiments and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Mendel.s Experimental Material. Mendel selected Garden pea for his experiments because (i) Pure varieties of pea were available. (ii) Pea plants showed a number of easily detectable contrasting characters. (iii) The flowers are large, bisexual which normally remain closed and undergo self-pw. .ination. (iv) Because of self-pollination it has many pure lines for alternative forms of trait i.e., breed true, a condition necessary for breeding experiments. (v) Pea plants are annual and have a short life span. (vi) Artificial cross-pollination can be easily done by removing the stamens (emasculation) from a flower to be used as female parent. (vii) A large number of seeds (offspring) are produced per pod per generation. (viii) Varieties of the pea plants having seven contrasting traits studied by Mendel were easily available. (ix) The plants are grown easily and does not require care except at time of cross-pollination and bagging.
