Opiates. The drugs dervied from opium along with their synthetic relatives are called `"opioids"//"opiates"`. These are extracted from the dried Tatex (opium) of poppy plant Papaver somniferum. The drug binds to specific opioid receptors present in our central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract. Heroin commonly called smack is chemically diacetyl morphine prepared by acetylation of morphine extracted from latex, It is a white colourless, bitter, crystalline compound. Smack is taken by snorting and injection. it is a depressant and slows down body functions. Other opioids are morphine, codeine, pethidine etc.
