Addiction. The state of psychological and physiological dependence of an individual to the intake of certain drug due to its repeated use on a continuous basis.
Harmful Effects of Tobacco.
1. Stains and Smell. Smoking stains teeth and fingers. Use of tobacco in any form is accompanied by an unpleasant smell.
2. Cough. Deposition of tar in respiratory tract, heat, ciliotoxins and irritants present in tobacco smoke cause a chronic wheezing cough and sputum production. It is called smoker.s cough.
3. Emphysema. Inflammation of respiratory tract, bronchoconstriction and bronchiole obstructions lead to breakdown of alveolar walls and reduction in the area of exchange of respiratory gases. The disorder is called emphysema. It results in shorter breath.
4. Bronchitis. Smoking often leads to bronchitis. Bronchitis is acute chronic inflammation and irritation of trachea, bronchi and bronchioles. Obstructions may occur in finer passages. Diffusing capacity of respiratory system is impaired.
5. Shorter Breath. Smokers often show shorter breath and breathlessness. It is due to two reasons: (i) Higher percentage of carboxyhaemoglobin (2-15%). It reduces oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. (ii) Respiratory tract inflammation and irritation.
6. Blood Pressure and Heart Beat. Nicotine has a stimulating effect on adrenal glands. There is increased secretion of adrenaline and noradrenaline. As a result both heart beat and blood pressure increase.
7. Fall in Immunity. There is decreased immunity to various diseases. Respiratory system infections become more common in smokers, e.g., influenza, pneumonia.
8. Cramps and Tremors. Tobacco addicts experience frequent tremors and cramps.
9. Gastrointestinal Disorders. There is increased incidence of duodenal and peptic ulcers. Oesophageal and pyloric sphincters become less efficient. Pancreas secrete less secretions.
10. Premature Wrinkling. Smoking brings about premature wrinkling.
