Physical adsorption is multilayered while chemisorption is monolayered. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In physical adsorption, the bonding between adsorbent and adsorbate is weak van der Waal.s bonding which is due to electrostatic forces of attraction between opposits charges. As such multimolecular layers are possible. No doubt the second, third layers of adsorbate will be less tightly held by the adsorbent than the first layer. In chemical adsorption the adsorbate is held on the surface of adsorbent by chemical bonds. Once all the bonds on the surface of adsorbent are used for chemical bonding, no further adsorption is possible. Hence in chemical adsorption only one layer of adsorbate is formed in the adsorbent i.e., chemical adsorption is monolayered.

Why is chemical adsorption unimolecular while physical adsorption is multimolecular ?

What is physical adsorption.

Read the given passage and answers following questions : There are mainly two type of adsorption of gases on solids. If accumulation of gases on the surface of solid occurs on account of weak vander waal forces, the adsorption is termed as physical adsorption. When gas molecules or atoms held to solid surface by chemical bonds, adsorption is termed as chemical adsorption. The chemical bonds may be covalent or ionic. Chemical adsorption involves a high energy of activation therefore it is referred as Activated adsorption. A physical adsorption at low temperature may pass into chemical adsorption temperature is increased. Give conditions of temperature which favours physical adsorption.
