Why the rate of physical adsorption decreases with the rise of temperature ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Physisorption is an exothermic process:
`underset("(Adsorbent)")("Solid")+ underset("(Adsorbate)")("Gas") hArr underset("Gas absorbed on solid")("Gas//Solid") + "Heat"`
According to Le Chatelier.s principle, if we increase the temperature, equilibrium will shift in the backward direction, i.e., gas is released from the absorbed surface.
Thus physisorption decreases with increase in temperature.
