What are the factors which influence the adsorption of a gas on a solid ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Extent of adsorption of a gas on a solid depends upon following factors.
(i) Nature of the gas : Easily liqufiable gases (i.e., with higher critical temperature) are adsorbed more.
(ii) Temperature: Lower the temperature, more is the extent of adsorption.
(iii) Pressure : Extent of adsorption increases with increase in pressure, till saturation pressure is achieved.
(iv) Surface area of adsorbent: The extent of adsorption increases with the increase in surface area of the adsorbent.
(v) Nature of adsorbent: The extent of adsorption of a gas depends upon nature of adsorbent. Activated charcoal can adsorb easily liquifiable gases while metals like Pt and Pd can easily adsorb hydrogen.
(vi) Activation of adsorbent : Activation of adsorbent means, increasing of the adsorbing power of adsorbent. It is very important to increase the rate of adsorption. It is done either by subdividing which increases the surface area or by heating in superheated steam or vaccuum in case of charcoal.
