Can adsorption occur from solutions ? Give examples.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Adsorption from solutions. Adsorption on the surface of solids can also occur from solutions. For example, activated charcoal is used for removing coloured organic matter from solutions. If we place a piece of charcoal in a litmus solution taken in a test tube and shake it, the solution gets decolourised. This is due to the adsorption of litmus (dye) by the charcoal. Similarly, when a weak ammonia solution is shaken with activated charcoal, ammonia is adsorbed.
Activated charcoat is used to decolourise sugarcane juice by adsorbing colouring matter in preference to sugar. From a solution of acetic acid in water charcoal adsorbs acetic acid.
