Describe some features of catalysis by zeolites.

Zeolites are shape selective catalysts. It is due to their honeycomb-like structure. They are microporous aluminosilicates with three dimensional network of silicates in which same Si atoms are replaced by Al atoms giving Al-O- Si frame-work. The reactions catalysed by zeolites depend upon the size and shape of reactant and product molecules as well as upon the pores and cavities of zeolites.
Zeolites are widely used as catalysts in petrochemical industries for cracking of hydrocarbons and isomerisation. An important zeolite catalyst used in petroleum industry in ZSM-5%. It converts alcohols directly into petrol by dehydrating them to give a mixture of hydrocarbons.
