What are Enzymes ? Give important characteristics of enzyme catalysis.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Enzymes : They are biological catalysts produced by living cells which catalyze the biological reactions.
Characteristics of enzyme catalysis
(i) Enzymes are highly specific in nature.
(ii) A small amount of enzymes is quite sufficient in catalysing the reaction.
(iii) These are most active at moderate pH and moderate temperature.
(iv) The activity of many enzymes is regulated by a number of mechanisms and inhibited by various organic and inorganic molecules.
