What is peptization ? What is cause of peptization ? Give one example.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The process of conversion of a freshly prepared precipitate into colloidal solution by adding suitable electrolyte is called peptization and the electrolyte (`FeCl_3, HCI` etc.) being used is called peptizing agent.

Cause. It involves the adsorption of ions of the electrolyte by the fine particles of the ppt. and they form colloidal solution. e.g., on adding a small amount of `FeCl_3` solution to the freshly prepared precipitate of `Fe(OH)_3`, it gets changed into colloidal form.
